Sounds are metal rods used by the medical community to dilate an urethra and/or cervix; sometimes they are called sounds, but sometimes they are called dilators. Since I'm discussing them here, you know it's not medical uses I'm interested in. ;)

Sounds are one of the toys useful for cock-and-ball torture. There's several common manufacturers of the medical versions: Hegar's, Van Buren's, Pratt's and Dittel's. There's a number of safety concerns for a beginner playing with sounds.

• begin with a very small size sound for your first time, 1/16" (about 3-4mm) is good
• sterilize the clean sound by rinsing it in isopropyl alcohol, then placing it on a sterile cloth (like a wrapped bandage) and allow it to air dry
• clean the head of your penis well with betadine before you begin
• clean your hands thoroughly; put on sterile gloves before beginning the insertion
• use lots of lube, preferably a surgical lubricant; don't use the same lube you use for anal play (to reduce the risks of infection due to cross-contamination)
• stop immediatly if there's any blood
• understand that you will be sore afterwards, especially when you piss
• a sound does stretch the urethra, the length of time it takes to return to normal depends on how long the sound was inserted and how large it was
• when you're done playing, wash the sound with hot soapy water, then rinse with hot water and allow to dry before storing

medical sounds

The Pratt kit contains 8 chrome-plated chrome sounds each over 13" in length, for a total of 16 insertion diameters ranging from 3/16" to 1/2," even the smallest of these is a bit much for a beginner.

The Hegar kit also contains 8 sounds, but is shorter at about 8" each. The 16 available diameters range from 1/16" to 5/8". This is the kit I recommend to beginners as it has a 1/16" size to start with.

The Hegar flat kit has 8 7" sounds, but is only usable on one end, providing 8 diameters from 1/8" to 5/8".

fetish sounds

The Rosebud kit contains 8 sounds are 11" long and have a "rosebud" or "bullet" shaped tip, which maximizes the sensation during insertion, but provides a bit of relief as you get it in further. The diameters range from 1/8" to 1/2". It is the best kit if you wish to play with temperature as the sounds retain either cold or heat well.

The flower and star sounds are similar, each is under 3" in length, with a decorative sliding silver guard and jeweled tip. The sound itself is tapered, ranging from about 1/8 - 1/4". I think these are very pretty and would decorate a sub nicely for a playparty.

advanced sounds

This stuff is not for beginners! If you're very experienced with sounds play, these are a few ideas you might want to explore.

The long-wearing sound is 3" long and 1/3" in diameter. The sound itself has a hole in the center to allow urination, hence it being long-wearing. It attaches via a ring around the glans, which comes in 1" and 1.25" sizes. It's made of medical-grade stainless steel so is safe to have in the body for longer periods.

The gates-of-hell sound is a combination of the typical gates of hell with the glans and cock rings with a sound. The sound is 3" long with a 1/3" diameter, and it also comes with a hole to allow urinaiton or ejaculation. It comes with three rings at 1", 1.2" and 1.5" for a custom fit.
